"Red Cross" ~ by Gabe Cardinale

Recently, I had the privilege of meeting Dallas based artist, Gabe Cardinale.  The introduction couldn't have occurred at a more opportune time.  I had been searching for some art for a client of mine and I hadn't had much luck in locating the perfect piece.  In this case, I was specifically seeking out a red cross ~ something similar to the symbol representing the American Red Cross.  When talking to Gabe about commissioning the piece, he was all in and I couldn't be more grateful.  As you can see, the oil on canvas appropriately titled "Red Cross," turned out beautifully and far exceeded my expectations.

"Red Cross" ~ Gabe Cardinale

The detail of the cross is amazing as you can tell from the following closeup photos.

The proud owner is more than ecstatic about the new art ~ it provides quite the focal point above the cast stone fireplace. I'm so happy to have met artist and new friend, Gabe Cardinale.  Please note ~ Gabe's work ranges from print and paint, to designing with plants and mixed media.  If you are interested in commissioning an original piece of art from Gabe, you can contact him here or here.  Have a good week and thanks for stopping by.  :)

Hairpin Table ~ Revamp

As I mentioned in my previous post, I traveled to Austin last week to work on a Mid-Century Modern apartment design.  It belongs to none other than Reagan, my oldest.  In pulling the space together, I've been seeking out authentic vintage finds to help capture the Mid-Century Modern era.  I found this awesome hairpin table at Lula B's in Dallas.

It was a little rough and rusty, when I spotted it ~ but the price was right.

Nothing a little elbow grease, some scraping and steel wool couldn't cure.  I used #0000 steel wool for the clean-up.

Then I sprayed it with a couple of light coats of Rust-oleum's metallic silver spray paint ~ it was all the table needed to take it back to its original lustre.

A great accessory for the hairpin table ~ this Standard stamp holder ~ it came from M'Antiques in the Bishop Arts District.   See another way I used one of these stamp holders here.

After allowing time for the paint to dry, I repositioned the glass table top and it was ready for use.  The time and effort was well spent on this demure little table.  It fits the spot perfectly.  Stay tuned for more photos of the MCM install.  Hope you have a great week!

A Chair Makeover

Sometimes I think I'm just plain weird.  It would be so much easier to just go buy a chair from a retail store like most people.  Instead, I find myself traipsing around antique stores, flea markets, junk stores or thrift stores in search of a lost and lonely soul that needs a home.  Something about the genetics I guess...it's in my blood.

This find is of the thrift store variety ~ it set me back 4 bucks.  I just thought it had charm ~ and I love the barrel style.

I sprayed it black...

Recovered the cushion in a fine Belgian linen (a remnant I had)...

I love the end result....

Something about projects like this are quite therapeutic ~ any more weirdos out there like me? :)

Off to Austin to work on a mid century modern apartment ~ a diversion from the norm...but EXCITING.  Pics will soon follow.  Have a great week!

One Year Anniversary + Signage

On February 2nd (one year ago) I put out my first post for Tattered Style.  I can't believe that was over 100 posts ago.  In my naivety, I had no idea how much time was involved with writing a blog.  I must admit, there were occasions when balancing family, work, etc. and blogging has been a real challenge.  Somehow, I've bumbled my way through and I've learned a lot along the way.  I appreciate your patience with me as I continue to pursue this venture.

As I peruse the many other blogs out there, I realize there is much room for growth.  In my attempt at blogging, I have enjoyed sharing my love for design and the Tattered Style ~ the art of living with the not so perfect.  I want to take a moment to say, "Thank you," for actually taking time to read Tattered Style.  I know there are countless other blogs out there and I'm honored you would take the time to read mine.  That's enough of me being sappy.  Today, I'm sharing my favorite thing I landed at the Dallas Market Vintage FINDS.

I snagged this one of a kind sign from The Seed Box Antiques.  Owners, Brian and Meloney Russell are so talented ~ no wonder, their space won Best Display at the show.  They have an amazing gift for pulling things together and stylizing the in the most magnificent way.  Be sure to check at their blog here.  Meloney told me she acquired the sign in San Antonio, Texas.  I believe it to be a directional sign for various family homeplaces out in the country.

The shades and tones of the sign are the perfect combination ~ subtle and sophisticated.  I love this new addition so much it now hangs in my guest room.

It's quite a statement piece for the room and definitely a keeper!

It's been so much fun getting to make new friends through Tattered Style this past year.  I would love to have your opinion regarding what you would like to see more or less of (as painful as it may be ~ so please be gentle).  You can drop me a line here.  Have a great Super Bowl weekend.  XO ~ Dana
