Feeling Artsy

Today I'm feeling especially artsy or you could say "puttsy" ~ either one ~ they are both interchangeable to me.  Probably because I'm dreaming of how the installation will come together in the space at market next week ~ read more here.

Also, for me, puttsing with my stuff is therapeutic and a great stress reliever.  I lose myself in the moment and time stands still.  It's my happy place.

Things I love about this installation ~

1) The clothing rack for sure ~ it has an adjustable second bar.  2) The vintage movie projector screen.

3) The brown paper stenciled letters ~ I spelled "HOME" out with and attached to the screen with electrical tape.

 4) The vintage French Linen aprons ~ they are buttery soft!  5) The old wooden hangers ~ so charming.

5) The vintage fan ~ thinking it probably wouldn't meet safety standards today but it's still a cool piece.  6) And lastly, the factory stool.  I must confess ~ I like it all.

I'm off to get ready for dinner with friends.  I celebrated my birthday yesterday and the celebration continues this evening.  I love when that happens!  ;)

Thank you for taking time to stop by Tattered Style today.  Be inspired and have a lovely weekend!  Dana

Letter Love

I have a fascination for letters and numbers of all sorts.  They seem to pop up all over my house.  The "P" collection, shown hanging above, is a random grouping displayed in my powder bath.  I acquired this motley crew of letters over time from various people and places.  And of course, each has a story.  Today I thought I would share them with you.  Oh, in case you were wondering about the significance of the letter "P' ~ it's the first initial of my last name.

The larger metal "P" is from a collection of letters used on an old movie marquee.  The smaller one is an old printer's block letter.  I found them both at a flea market.

I made this "P" from sheet rock and spray paint ~ check it out here!

This tin "P" was a Christmas gift from my niece, Brittney.  She found it here at Urban Outfitters.

I purchased the cardboard letter at a stationary shop for a couple of dollars.  The small wooden "P" came from the clearance section at Pottery Barn.

I love how this arrangement is a bit quirky and how the letters seem to be hanging out together on this old peg rack.  It's a nice focal point for the powder room and it makes me happy.

Do you have any funky letters/numbers displayed creatively in your home?  I would love to see how you've used them!

Please come back and see me again here soon.  Also, I would love for you to check out my Pinterests ~ you can do so here.

An Austin Styled Apartment

I ventured down to Austin a few weeks ago and kinda fell in love with the city.  I'm quite certain it is my destiny to live there someday.  I'm especially smitten with Hyde Park, the area my oldest son decided to put his first roots down in ~ it's a great old neighborhood with lots of character.  I looked forward to waking each morning just knowing I was steps away from a cozy bakery or coffee shop.  Needless to say, I was happy for the chance to help Reagan set up house there.

Since we were starting from scratch and working on a budget, it was essential to find great pieces for less.  I had to keep in mind Reagan's desire to go with a Mad Men/Mid Century Modern style and was hoping some of my favorite spots would provide me with some of the furnishings.  Prior to going down, I paid a few visits to some local thrift stores I frequent as well as Lula B's Antique Mall, "a treasure trove of all things fine and funky, kitschy and collectible, vintage and pimpadelic."  I'm quite thrilled with the purchases ~ and think they are key foundational pieces for the apartment.  Here are a few of my favorite finds ~

Massage Chair:  I was pinching myself when I came across this incredible "massage chair" in mint condition ~ and the best part ~ it still works!  I dared not leave its side until an associate had put a "Sold" sign on it.  ;)

Chair/Hairpin Table/Letter "P":  I positioned the chair in the living area ~ after a long days work it was a welcome spot to recline to.  I sat a hairpin table next to the massage chair ~ it provides just enough space to rest a drink or book on.  You can read  more about it here.  The giant letter "P" was a freebie (yea!) and made great wall art.  I acquired it as it was being removed from a building by a sign company ~ who was replacing the existing signage with a new one.  I was happy to learn from the workers that oftentimes sign companies are willing to unload old signage for little (or in my case) no cost.

Coffee Table:  When I'm looking for something in particular, Lula B's is my go-to place.  They have a constant turnover of unique, one-of-a-kind items.  I think if I shopped with them daily, there would always be a surprise discovery.  Such was the case with this great coffee table.  It was the perfect scale for the apartment and had the exact lines I was looking for.

A little furniture restorer went a long way in bringing back the coffee table to its original lustre. You might notice the graphic rug the table is sitting on.  Reagan found this showstopper here.  I decided to place it on an angle for a little visual punch.

Buffet:  There was a need for some additional book storage ~ so when I found this piece I knew immediately it would fit the bill.  The $32 price tag didn't hurt one bit either.  :)

The buffet itself, had great legs and lines ~ so all it needed was a couple of vintage accessories to  compliment its style.  With the addition of a lighted globe and a vintage typewriter ~ I was able to achieve the look I knew Reagan was hoping for.  As he and I worked from room to room, the place started evolving into quite a charming spot.  Be sure to check back here soon to see pics of the rest of Reagan's Austin apartment.

P.S.  Still searching for the perfect 7' mid-century modern sofa for the living room ~ hopefully a sooner -than-later find!  :)

Stash ~ Vintage Finds

 Amber Bottles and Pulleys

I've been working for the past week with Kelley, from The Hidden List, Gloria, from A Modern Glo and Lisa, from Cut and Paste, pulling together our space at the Dallas Gift Market's new venue,  Vintage FINDS.  We've come together as Stash ~ Vintage Finds to share our love of all things funky, industrial, old and vintage.  We're excited about this opportunity to share, showcase and sell our merchandise.  Although it's been a whirlwind week (there's barely even time to stop and eat) it's great working together with like minded people.  We've also had the chance to meet and make new friends along the way.  I wanted to share a few pics I snapped from our space ~ I hope you enjoy!

A Little Letter Experiment

I love letters and numbers ~ I can't help it, I just do!  The other day I was playing around with an adhesive product to see how it would work using cardboard stencils and spray paint on a variety of surfaces.  In doing so, I pulled out a scrap piece of sheetrock I had laying around and stenciled it with the letter "P".  I have such a fondness for ordinary, unpretentious materials like plain old drywall.  The combination of the silvery "P" on the sheetrock was so pleasing to me ~ I decided to keep it and use it on the buffet in my breakfast nook.

To begin my accidental experiment ~ I used 6" stencils I had previously purchased from the local Ace hardware store.

The product I was experimenting with was the stencil adhesive spray (shown above) from Michael's.  I love this product!  The adhesive forms a nice seal for the stencil when using it with various types of paint and prevents the paint from seeping under the stencil.

I began with a piece of sheetrock and a stencil.  I gave the back of the stencil several light coats of spray adhesive and allowed it to become tacky to the touch.  Then I positioned it on the piece of sheetrock.

I taped off the part I didn't want painted (with blue painter's tape) so there wouldn't be any overspray to the rest of the area, then sprayed the stenciled area with several light coats of silver spray paint.

The spray adhesive I applied to the back of the stencil prevented the paint from seeping under the stencil and created nice, clean lines.

I didn't intend on using the "P" as a design element, but I love the way it turned out and propped it up on an easel I already had.

I liked the simple combination of something so ordinary as a piece of sheetrock and the stenciled letter that I decided it was only fitting to give it a place of honor.  :)  I'm in high gear, as I'm sure you most of you are, in preparing for Thanksgiving next week.  I'm so thankful all the boys will be home!  I hope to be seeing you here again soon.  Please check out Tattered Style on Facebook and Pinterest.

Springs Have Sprung

I don't usually go all out for holiday decor.  Instead, I like to add a few simple touches to create a little seasonal ambiance.  This Thanksgiving, I decided to use some old bed springs, to convey a sentiment of thankfulness.

I started out with some salvaged bed springs that were taken from an old bed frame ~ I found it on a trash heap at a house my friend was demoing.  All I had to do was cut the springs off of the bed frame with some tin snips.  Here they are after they've been removed ~ I also love the way they look, casually tossed in a bowl.

For this easy project, in addition to the bed springs, all you need are:
  • Paper Key Tags
  • Rubber Stamps
  • Ink Pad (color of your choice)

I found it much easier to stamp the letters on the key tag, if you remove the metal jump ring first, then reattach the ring to the tag once you are finished.

After this step, all you have to do is "thread" the tag onto the coil of the bed spring and, "Voila!"~ you are finished.

~ A quick way to create a little holiday decor or add a word of sentiment to any event or setting ~

I love these funky, old, rusty bed springs and the way they add a touch of "Thanksgiving" to this vignette in the dining room.  Be watching for more holiday tips and tricks throughout November and December.  Hoping you have a great week!
