Felt Furniture Miniatures

Saturday was the first time I dared to venture out to make a few exchanges/returns and check out the sales since before Christmas.  Unlike many, I'm a bit of a wuss when it comes to shopping the after Christmas sales, no matter how great the prices.  I generally get the courage to go out a few days after the crowds have subsided and usually there's still a few stray sale items to be found.

This past weekend, I lucked into these sweet felt furniture miniatures at Anthropologie.  I loved the overall look and texture of them ~ probably because I kind of have a thing for felt these days.  They were intended to be ornaments but that's not how I envisioned using them.  I knew I could snip the gold ornament strings off and find a home for the wee chairs, so they could be used year round.  Plus, they were just too good to pass up at 50% off.

I think this menagerie of little felt chairs looks lovely parading across the Pottery Barn dish (I found it at a thrift store for $1.00) and it proves true ~ good things often do come in small packages.

As we gear up for the New Year, I'm hoping your 2013 is filled to the brim with good things.  Thanks for taking the time to stop by Tattered Style.  Be sure to like Tattered Style on Facebook ~ here or follow me on Pinterest here!  XO ~ Dana

Letter Love

I have a fascination for letters and numbers of all sorts.  They seem to pop up all over my house.  The "P" collection, shown hanging above, is a random grouping displayed in my powder bath.  I acquired this motley crew of letters over time from various people and places.  And of course, each has a story.  Today I thought I would share them with you.  Oh, in case you were wondering about the significance of the letter "P' ~ it's the first initial of my last name.

The larger metal "P" is from a collection of letters used on an old movie marquee.  The smaller one is an old printer's block letter.  I found them both at a flea market.

I made this "P" from sheet rock and spray paint ~ check it out here!

This tin "P" was a Christmas gift from my niece, Brittney.  She found it here at Urban Outfitters.

I purchased the cardboard letter at a stationary shop for a couple of dollars.  The small wooden "P" came from the clearance section at Pottery Barn.

I love how this arrangement is a bit quirky and how the letters seem to be hanging out together on this old peg rack.  It's a nice focal point for the powder room and it makes me happy.

Do you have any funky letters/numbers displayed creatively in your home?  I would love to see how you've used them!

Please come back and see me again here soon.  Also, I would love for you to check out my Pinterests ~ you can do so here.

House Tour ~ Dining Room

I want to share some photos that will give a better understanding of how my dining room is laid out.  When we moved here eleven years ago, this space served as a den/family room and trust me ~ it was not a pretty sight.  It had dated wallpaper, dark paneling and popcorn ceilings.  Thankfully (and with a lot of elbow grease) over time, this area has transformed.

Not too long ago, I decided to flip rooms and now this serves as the dining room.  It is conveniently situated off of the kitchen and has generous proportions.  I don't think there are any rules when it comes to using rooms as you see fit.  This arrangement has worked out well for us and we now use the other room as a small living area.

You might be wondering what is hiding behind the expanse of curtains ~ it's a small office area.  When I'm having guests, I just close the curtain and all the untidiness of the desk magically disappears.  The buffet ~ a garage sale find ~ is patiently awaiting a promised redo.  My plans are to paint it a lighter color ~ it will update it and make it stand out a bit more.  I think it looks kind of drab in its current state.  And as for the numbered chest;  read more about it here.

I love this large cart ~ it holds an abundance of items.  Find out more about this Wisteria cart here.

To make the space feel a little more like a dining room, I removed the ceiling fan and replaced it with a chandelier ~ in the evening it sets the room aglow.  Find it here

I couldn't help but include this photo of these beautiful roses that my dear friend Jennifer surprised me with ~ even in black and white they are stunning.  If you would like, read more about the vintage classroom door here.

This space has served up some very special moments for friends and family ~ and some pretty yummy meals as well.  Someday, I hope to replace this farm style table with a larger one ~ for now it's fine ~ we just squeeze in around it.  I hope your week is filled with good things.

P.S. Jen ~ thanks for the roses ~ they made my day!  XO

Gothic Window

I was captivated by this Gothic window when I first stumbled upon it at a flea market.  One might consider it simple ~ but I feel it is stately in its own right.  The window itself isn't ornate or showy but rather plain ~ and the frame is by no means elaborate.  I was drawn to the combination of its form, shape and texture and at $20 it was a steal ~ so, of course I found it necessary to bring home with me.

I opted to display it in a a prominent corner of my sitting room.  I attached this curvy hook to the crown molding and let the window dangle from an extension of chain.

The *chain idea was a signature detail that I borrowed from designer, Carol Hicks Bolton, a number of years ago.  Now, I use them everywhere.

The window's weathered finish pays homage to my love for the tattered style.  It's framing provides the perfect little narrow ledge ~  an ideal resting spot for this vintage letter "P" and this small cross by artist Jan Barboglio.

Simplicity at its best ~ in my eyes.

The beautiful Gothic window adds character to this relaxing little reading corner ~ my husband's favorite space to kick up his feet, sip a cup of coffee, read a spell and ponder all life's happenings.  The leather chair ~ a Pottery Barn purchase; the floor lamp ~ a thrift store find; the oversized wall clock ~ a family heirloom (more about that some other time).  Here's hoping you find time to kick up your feet this weekend. :)

Faces of Time

Clocks ~ another thing I have an odd affection for ~ possibly because they tout an array of lovely faces.  I have a love for any type of letters or numerals ~ so why not on a clock face as well?  It really doesn't matter to me whether my clocks work or not.  Honestly, don't most of us look to our cell phones to check the time these days?  I'm not particularly biased when it comes to my collection.  And although these tick-tocks are a motley crew, I do appreciate them for all their uniqueness.  Some may run a little slow while others have broken faces ~ no worries ~ they fit in just fine in my Tattered Style world. Plain and simple ~ I have an appreciation for clocks and thought I might share a few I possess.

This retro looking electric clock was found at an estate sale.  It purrs softly as it runs ~ eventually it gets behind ~ no bother every now and then I take a moment to adjust it.

One might think this is vintage, but it's not.  It's a nice little knockoff from Pottery Barn.  I think they did a lovely job ~ and this one actually does keep good time which makes my husband happy.

I know ~ this one has a broken face but it's so wonderfully tattered.  I scooped this one up at a flea market for a few dollars.  I think it had been passed over many times ~ but not by me.

Clocks can add a sense of coziness to any setting ~ they're perched all over my home. Here one rests on a shelf in one of my living rooms. Next time you are creating a vignette, why not incorporate some lovely old clocks in the mix as well?

Also, just though I would let you know, Tattered Style is now pinning on Pinterest ~ click here to view my pins.  I hope you have an enjoyable weekend.  :)
