Dining Room Change Up

As much as I have loved the charming farm table (see it here) we've been using in our dining room for the past ten years, it was simply time for something bigger.  I was happy to find this parson's table at C & B Outlet here.  Thankfully, it cost me 1/3 of the original price.

Previously we could only seat six comfortably around the table, now we can seat up to ten with room to spare.

I love the natural teak wood and the clean, simple lines of the table.

With the larger table I added some additional French cafe chairs.  And I've also played around with the accessories in the space and edited some things out.

Yea ~ more space for family and friends around the table for dinners, games or whatever.  Now I'm off to Austin with my youngest son, Gavin.  He's representing his school in the state poetry competition.  Cross your fingers ~ the winner is awarded a scholarship!  I hope your weekend is a winner.  XO ~ Dana

Vibrant in Blue / Vintage Receiving Stand

I had a feeling I wouldn't be able to part with this old receiving stand when I found it on Craigslist.  Stands like this were, and still are, used in restaurants and various other places as a receiving station.  When it came time for me to sell some Tattered Style treasures (aka Stash) at the Dallas Market this past winter, I had every intention of selling this wonderful old piece.  But the longer it sat around here, the more it's vibrant blue color grew on me.

It was pretty dirty and neglected when my husband picked it up and brought it home to me.  He said it had been sitting out in the open for an undetermined amount of time.  Really, all it needed was a little TLC.

Just recently I had a little time to give it some attention.  I scrubbed it down from top to bottom.  Then I scraped any loose paint off with a 5-in-1 tool (I use this tool quite often with projects ~ I've found it to be an absolute essential to have in my toolbox).  I gave it a final cleaning with some #OOO steel wool.  Lastly, I sealed it with some Minwax wipe on satin polyurethane ~ a breeze to work with ~ you simply wipe it on with an old cloth.  Find it here.

The piece is a bit of a departure from my normal neutral surroundings ~ but I do love the pop of color it provides.  I love the way it cozies up this corner of my dining room.  It's ample sized drawer holds napkins and placemats.  By the way, the black and white pen and ink drawing hanging above it was a $10 find at the Wisteria Outlet.

Someday I may choose to pass this wonderful old receiving stand along ~ but for now, I'm enjoying it for myself.  However ~ I am planning on selling some other items in an online sale ~ I hope to have it up later this week.  Be sure to stop back by Tattered Style again soon!

Thankful Today

I'm thankful today for many things ~ but most importantly ~ my faith, family and friends.  I'm also thankful for you and the opportunity you allow me in sharing my love for Tattered Style ~ the art of living with the not so perfect.  So while I'm off enjoying some time with the family, I wanted to share a simple post of "thanks" with you.

I'm pretty smitten with these wonderful old wooden printer's block letters ~ I often spell out sentiments and place them around my home on vintage ironstone plates or platters (I found the letters here ~ Wanda, in Antique Alley has the best selection).

For Thanksgiving, I used this wonderful blue and white vintage grain sack (folded over) as a runner atop the buffet in my dining room.  I found this one here

The old buffet was a garage sale find and is still patiently awaiting a paint transformation.  The pretty fall colored flowers were a treat my hubby brought home the other day.  I can't think of anything more charming to put them in than this old Kerr canning jar.

Thank you for stopping by today ~ I hope you are having a nice little reprieve from the norm and are enjoying time with those you love.  XO

House Tour ~ Dining Room

I want to share some photos that will give a better understanding of how my dining room is laid out.  When we moved here eleven years ago, this space served as a den/family room and trust me ~ it was not a pretty sight.  It had dated wallpaper, dark paneling and popcorn ceilings.  Thankfully (and with a lot of elbow grease) over time, this area has transformed.

Not too long ago, I decided to flip rooms and now this serves as the dining room.  It is conveniently situated off of the kitchen and has generous proportions.  I don't think there are any rules when it comes to using rooms as you see fit.  This arrangement has worked out well for us and we now use the other room as a small living area.

You might be wondering what is hiding behind the expanse of curtains ~ it's a small office area.  When I'm having guests, I just close the curtain and all the untidiness of the desk magically disappears.  The buffet ~ a garage sale find ~ is patiently awaiting a promised redo.  My plans are to paint it a lighter color ~ it will update it and make it stand out a bit more.  I think it looks kind of drab in its current state.  And as for the numbered chest;  read more about it here.

I love this large cart ~ it holds an abundance of items.  Find out more about this Wisteria cart here.

To make the space feel a little more like a dining room, I removed the ceiling fan and replaced it with a chandelier ~ in the evening it sets the room aglow.  Find it here

I couldn't help but include this photo of these beautiful roses that my dear friend Jennifer surprised me with ~ even in black and white they are stunning.  If you would like, read more about the vintage classroom door here.

This space has served up some very special moments for friends and family ~ and some pretty yummy meals as well.  Someday, I hope to replace this farm style table with a larger one ~ for now it's fine ~ we just squeeze in around it.  I hope your week is filled with good things.

P.S. Jen ~ thanks for the roses ~ they made my day!  XO

Wisteria Cart

This post has the potential of sounding like a poorly written *commercial ~ but what can I say? The facts are the facts!  Storage space is scarce in my home so I'm always on the lookout for additional ways to creatively store items.  I fell for a vintage baker's cart at Round Top but practicality was an issue.

Luckily I ran across this cart at the Wisteria Outlet.  Although it's newly constructed, it has been made from reclaimed lumber so it has the feel of a vintage piece to me. I love it not only because it has ample space to stash everyday essentials like dishes and linens but it also provides a great space for display.   It fits beautifully in this little nook in my dining room.

It's no surprise ~ I love the casters ~ they make it easy to move from room to room.  Which is a good thing for me ~ invariably it will end up in another room in due time.  Another great feature is the way the iron detail frames the piece out ~ it adds character out the wazoo!

A great place to display my vintage scale collection, crocks, ironstone and more!

This little corner is a little slice of heaven for me ~ the open shelf unit has the feeling of a Parisian style kitchen.  It also holds some of my favorite flea market finds ~ maybe it's a good thing I don't have much storage space in my house. :)
