Christmas Time Is Here...Oh Dear!

Wow ~ before we know it Christmas will be here.  It's been a whirlwind of activity around our place.  Due to the recent Texas ice storm, the Holiday Home Tour was cancelled and rescheduled for this past Saturday where hundreds of people came through our home.  I hope my style and my design conveyed that you don't have to have a McMansion nor do you have to spend a fortune in order to create an inviting and personalized environment for you and yours.

As a token of appreciation for having my home on the tour, I was presented with this beautiful architectural rendering of my house created by Shelley Minnis.  Thanks Shelley ~ I will treasure this forever!

Then on Sunday, I was honored to have Hilary Walker from Our Style Stories, drop in for a visit as she did a photo shoot and style story for her blog.  I hope you hop on over to her site and take a look at my home as seen through her eyes and her beautiful photography.

Holiday Home Tour

Here of late, among other things, I've been scurrying around prepping my home for the Coppell Holiday Home Tour.  Earlier this fall I was asked if my home could be on the tour and I happily agreed to be a part of this worthwhile event.  The annual affair benefits the Assistance League of Coppell and is their primary fundraiser.

I'm extending a personal invitation to you, your family and friends and would love for you to join in on the fun this Friday or Saturday, December 6th and 7th.  I will be featuring some unique Tattered Style Christmasy decor as well as some DIY's that will be easy to duplicate.

Found ~ A Banker's Chair

It makes me happy to give an item or a piece of furniture another chance at being loved and used.  I'm never disappointed with the assortment of wonderful finds at Dwell With Dignity's Thrift Studio.  A few weeks ago, I was thrilled to walk away with this beautiful banker's chair which was part of their last pop-up store.  I'm always amazed at the fabulous pieces that are donated and sold for this most worthy organization.  If you didn't get a chance to make the fall studio, no worries, this is a biannual event that will be coming again next spring.

Light Up the Holidays

For those of you who can't wait to jump headfirst into the holidays, here's the perfect event for you to get your holiday spirit on.  This Tuesday evening, November 5th from 4:00 ~ 6:00 p.m. Currey and Company will be hosting an event to help usher in the holidays. 

With a little help from local designers, Hilary Walker (Our Style Stories), Lisa Robison and Kim Turner (Dwell With Dignity), Kelley Copeland (The Hidden List), Gloria Burson, Lisa Johnson and myself, you are sure to be inspired with some amazing holiday vignettes that will be featured in the midst of Currey and Company's beautiful showroom. 

The event will take place at the Dallas World Trade Center on the 10th Floor, Suite 10000, 2050 Stemmons Freeway, Dallas.  Currey and Company is graciously opening this event to the public at not charge.  Cocktails and lite bites will be served.  Additionally, valet parking will be provided.  However, it is necessary to RSVP to Lori McCarver at lmccarver@curreyco.com to secure your spot and be added to the guest list (this is your ticket into the building).  I hope to see you there!  

Corbin and Princess @ LARK on the Park

This past weekend, over a 36 hour period, Corbin put his creative talents to use at the hot and trendy restaurant, LARK on the Park in Dallas's Klyde Warren Park. 

The selection Corbin chose to recreate was a commissioned piece he had recently completed for my dear friend, Kelley Copeland of The Hidden List.  The drawing was of Kelley's beloved canine companion Princess, who recently passed away. 

As a dog lover, a whole lot of heart went into Corbin's interpretation of Princess as he tediously composed the drawing of her on the giant chalkboard canvas. 
  
Corbin's "Princess," will be on display at LARK on the Park through the month of November.  And soon, you will be able to view a complete video of the art installation on their website ~ find it here.

Hopefully, you will have the opportunity to make a visit down to LARK on the Park in the near future.  Be sure to stop in to view the amazing art created by some mighty talented artists and while you're there you must indulge in some of the amazing food and drinks they have to offer.  Additionally, be sure to read the bio's on each artist featured in LARK's menu.

BINGO ~ Marker Magnets + Electrical Panel Magnet Board

I'm currently in the process of converting the garage space into my office/studio.  One necessary evil I'm having to deal with is the unsightly electrical panel.  Instead of trying to hide it, I decided why not use it to my advantage as a magnet board.  It gave me the perfect excuse to pull out the vintage bingo markers my hubby gave me as part of a Valentine's gift several years ago.  I've been holding out ~ knowing someday they would be of use.  

The bingo magnets were easy to make.  I simply glued magnets (you can find them here) to the back of the bingo markers with E6000.  I let them glue dry overnight before using them.

You may have noticed the not-so-tidy paint job around the panel door ~ no worries ~ the whole room is in the process of a makeover.  I'm so excited about my creative space!

Oh, and if you are interested you can see another magnet project I did here ~ using leftover foreign coins.  Now I have two sets of magnets with a story.  :)

Before and After ~ Knoll Chair

It's long been a dream of mine to own an original Knoll piece of furniture.  But as we all know, they are so dang expensive.  When I attended Dwell With Dignity's Thrift Studio last fall, I was thrilled to find this vintage Knoll chair ~ with nameplate intact. 

 

Obviously, the chair needed a makeover.  

 

With the addition of this lovely faux white leather fabric. I think the Knoll chair has been returned to it's former glory.  I'm happy as a clam to have it sitting in my home.

Countdown to Market

It's hard to believe it's that time again.  The Stash girls are gearing up for another fun-filled week at the Dallas Market Center's ~ Vintage FINDS.  We are always thrilled to be a part of this wonderful event.  As always we are anxious to see all the amazing booths.  And word is out, there are numerous first time vendors joining in on the fun.  I can't wait to see what goodies are in store for one of the DMC's hottest venues.

As for the Stash Girls, we're headed in a different direction with our space this go around.  A whole lot of Tattered Style is what you can expect ~ plus a little bit of glam, a smattering of gold, some rich saturated colors and always, always vintage!

You will find  punches of color like this beautiful turquoise.

Pops of raspberry ~ as shown above ~ will be a welcomed accent throughout our space.

And how about these lush, tufted, green, velvet chairs sporting this fabulous trim.  A find that Gloria from A Modern Glo is still pinching herself about.  

We're adding a bit of fancifulness ~ tassels and trims for sure!

And a bit of the Midas touch is sure to lend a regal flair to the booth.

Reagan's Living Space ~ Continued

Sometimes life throws you a few curve balls.  In case you've been wondering if Tattered Style fell off the face of the planet, I didn't and I've missed being here.  I"m getting back in the swing of things and as I promised in my previous post ~ I'm putting up additional pics of Reagan's living room.  

 

 

The cool art and vintage chair belong to Reagan's roommate, Chris.  While many of the other furnishings were in Reagan's previous apartment.  Read more about them here. 

One of the primary requests for the living room was for it to be edited and clutter free.  I think we achieved our goal.

Additionally, the breakfast area was converted into an extra sitting/living area.  Bar stools at the counter and a table and chairs on the patio meet dining needs.  The best seat in the house is pictured below ~ it's an old vibrating massage chair that still works! 

I'm happy to share that Reagan and Chris are quite pleased with their new mid-century styled living room.  And in case you are interested, there's a plethora of mid-century modern treasures to be found.  Patience in locating the right piece for the right price is all that is required.  As proven above ~ a good number of the furnishings were found at wonderful vintage stores.

Finding Art / Ikea Style

 

Last week I took a couple of days off and made a road trip to Austin to help Reagan with a little design work in his new apartment.   One afternoon while shopping, Reagan and I were grumbling about the agonizing trek we had just made through Ikea, and just as we were about to check out we  stumbled across a bin of wooden bathtub organizers.

We had been searching for something to hang above the sofa and had reconciled that we were going to be leaving empty handed...when I spotted these.  We laid them out on the floor and started playing around with options of how they could be hung on a wall.  At $5.99 each they were a bargain that couldn't be passed up.  We picked up five of them and determined our find made the journey through Ikea worth every step.   

When we got back to the apartment, we ended up hanging the organizers vertically ~ staggering them ever so slightly.  This installation helps them take on a modern feel, which is exactly what we were aiming for.

Sleepy's On The Move

Sleepy recently changed locations for two reasons ~ 1) He creeped my son, Corbin, out when he was home visiting and would wake up in the guestroom with Sleepy looming large over him and 2) I couldn't stand the thought of him being hidden in a back room any longer.  So, here he is front and center as you enter the foyer to my home.  Notice the cluster glass pendant light from West Elm ~ it feels light and airy in the space.

I also recently added these two wonderful 19th Century ridged zinc barrels ~ I found them here. 

I put my hubby's collection of walking sticks in one of the barrels ~ they all are pretty sentimental to him.  Just wondering ~ what are you collecting these days?

Treasures From A Flea Market

What better way to spend a spring day than to go fleaing ~ another word for cheap therapy in my book.  Here are a few treasures that made it back with me from Roundtop.  I wish you could have been there too!  

Old trophy cups like the one above are becoming increasingly difficult to spot ~ especially one with this price tag.  This old camp trophy was a steal at $5 ~ and had to be the deal of the day!  

Handmade jewelry is one of my favorite things you find at flea markets.  Presently, I'm into feathers and wings.  The feather necklace shown here was made by Gleeful Peacock.

For the mad scientist in me, I couldn't resist this laboratory beaker.  I like that it's multifunctional and can do double duty as a quirky vase.

How adorable are these mini ladles?  I think they will be splendid for serving up dressings and sauces whether using them on a daily basis for my family or throwing a dinner party.

And lastly, I was so happy to find this cool pair of vintage cowboy boots ~ my favorite thing about them...they're broken in and COMFY!

The Midas Touch ~ A Royal DIY

Yea!!!  I finally found a little time to give this demure table a makeover.  It's surprising what a $5.00 can of spray paint and a little TLC can do.  A friend from elementary school had this telephone stand in her home when she was growing up.  This past fall she passed it on to me in hopes that it might be given a second chance.  After living with it for awhile, I established it possessed a regal personality and decided to give it the Midas touch.  It was a very simple project with a magical result!  Read more below to see how it took on a more majestic role.    

It had seen its share of wear and tear over the years.

 

It required a little gluing~ I used Elmer's wood glue ~ and clamping (notice I placed pieces of wood between the table and clamp so the table wouldn't be damaged when I cranked the clamp tight) .

It all so needed to be cleaned up, so I ran over it with an electric sander a few times.  I used 220 grit paper to knock off the lacquer and smooth out the scratches.  And lastly I gave it several light coats of gold spray paint ~ I used Rustoleum Metallic in Gold.

Here she is in all her new found glory ~ I think the Midas touch suits her well (notice how "it" became a "she" ~ it seemed only fitting!).

The black and white framed print (which looks like a castle to me), bumble bee (a symbol of royalty) dish and ceramic glove mold (notice the resemblance of the Queen of England's gloved hand) are all flea market finds.  The marble egg (kinda makes me think of the goose and the golden egg) and vintage charm bracelet (representative of the Crown Jewels) were given to me by Nana.  Don't you think the transformed ugly duckling should feel right at home here?  ;)

Therapy Time

Just playing around today with simple things that make me happy.  After a full week of designing for other people, it's always therapeutic for me to come home and putts in my own space.  I thought it was time to change up my kitchen table so I poked around in my storage closet and grabbed this vintage amber bottle and twisted some jute twine around its neck. 

As luck had it, I recently stumbled across these cool dice at one of my favorite vintage stores in Austin, find it here.  I decided they would be perfect paired with the vintage bottle and tossed them next to it.

To finish it off, I plopped a cutting from a curly willow in the bottle with hopes of transplanting it someday.  That's all for today, I'm making a huge effort to take it easy the rest of this weekend.  I hope you get to have some chill time too!
